Childhood Illness

August 11th, 2012

The thing is, it makes the skin look thin
as the scum of fat on a pot of broth
simmering, red holes through which you fear
he’ll escape like steam.  Of course it’s nothing
like that at all, blows over almost
as quick as breezes cool night sweats, though
his mama warns he’ll scar where he rubs,
foreseeing the afterburn, the aura
of his hitherto perfect body passing.
